Terms of Service

Effective Date: January 1, 2026 • Last Updated: March 2026

Please read these Terms of Service carefully before utilizing WildfireMap.live. By accessing our maps, data streams, and satellite telemetry, you acknowledge our life-safety disclaimers and agree to the operational guidelines below.

Mandatory Life-Safety Reminder

If you are in danger from an approaching wildfire, do not wait for satellite map updates. Follow instructions from local emergency authorities immediately. Call 911 (US/Canada) or 112 (Europe) in active life-threatening emergencies.

1. Critical Life-Safety & Evacuation Disclaimer

WILDFIREMAP.LIVE IS NOT AN EMERGENCY DISPATCH SERVICE OR OFFICIAL LIFE-SAFETY WARNING SYSTEM.

Satellite thermal data and smoke models presented on this website are aggregated exclusively for general informational, educational, and situational awareness purposes. Never delay evacuation or base life-or-death decisions solely on satellite data.

• If you are under an evacuation warning, evacuation order, or feel threatened by wildfire, smoke, or fire weather, evacuate immediately.

• Always prioritize directives broadcast by local law enforcement, county emergency management offices, CAL FIRE, state forestry services, municipal fire departments, and the National Weather Service (NWS).

2. Satellite Telemetry Latency & Physical Limitations

Users must understand the intrinsic scientific and physical constraints of spaceborne thermal radiometry:

  • Orbital Revisit Latency: Polar-orbiting Earth-observation satellites (including NASA Suomi-NPP, NOAA-20, NOAA-21, Terra, and Aqua) pass over any given terrestrial point approximately 2 to 4 times every 24 hours. Rapidly moving fire perimeters can advance miles between consecutive orbital overpasses.
  • Atmospheric & Canopy Obstruction: Thick pyrocumulonimbus cloud decks, dense cloud cover, and heavy tree canopies can attenuate or mask surface thermal infrared signatures, causing active flames to remain temporarily undetected by spaceborne sensors.
  • Thermal False Positives: High Fire Radiative Power (FRP) detections can occasionally be triggered by controlled agricultural burns, prescribed forestry treatments, industrial gas flaring, steel refineries, or solar reflections off metallic surface structures.

3. Acceptance of Terms & Eligibility

By accessing or using WildfireMap.live ("the Service"), you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree to these terms, you must not access or use the platform.

The Service is available to individuals worldwide without age-gating, provided that use complies with all applicable local, national, and international laws.

4. Permitted Use & Fair Access

WildfireMap.live is provided as a free public utility. You are granted a limited, revocable, non-exclusive license to view and interact with our maps for personal, academic, journalistic, and emergency-preparedness purposes.

The following activities are strictly prohibited:

  • Deploying automated scraping bots or high-frequency requests that overload our tile servers or degrade responsiveness during active disaster events.
  • Framing or mirroring the Service in a manner that misrepresents satellite thermal detections as guaranteed real-time perimeter boundaries.
  • Attempting to bypass security headers, rate limits, or CDN protections.

5. Intellectual Property & Public Telemetry Rights

Raw Earth observation data streams are in the public domain and provided by open scientific agencies, including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA LANCE/FIRMS), the European Space Agency (Copernicus CEMS), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the US Environmental Protection Agency (AirNow).

All original website design, user interface components, analytical algorithms, source code, visual branding, and trademarks are the exclusive intellectual property of WildfireMap.live.

6. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED ON AN "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" BASIS WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, OR SYSTEM AVAILABILITY.

WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, TIMELY, SECURE, OR ERROR-FREE, NOR DO WE WARRANT THE ABSOLUTE PRECISION, TIMELINESS, OR COMPLETENESS OF ANY WILDFIRE HOTSPOT, SMOKE PLUME POLYGON, OR AIR QUALITY METRIC.

7. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL WILDFIREMAP.LIVE, ITS OPERATORS, CONTRIBUTORS, AFFILIATES, OR DATA PROVIDERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING FROM OR RELATING TO YOUR USE OF, OR INABILITY TO USE, THE SERVICE, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO PROPERTY LOSS, PERSONAL INJURY, EVACUATION DELAYS, OR RELIANCE UPON ANY TELEMETRY DATA DISPLAYED.
